The United Arab Emirates (UAE), established in 1971 and located on the Arabian Peninsula, is a federation of seven neighbouring states:
Over the last four decades, the United Arab Emirates has grown from a small and quiet backwater, dependent on fishing and pearl diving, to one of the region’s most influential economic centres. The discovery of oil and its export has changed the country dramatically both economically and socially. The UAE has invested heavily in transforming itself into a regional trading and tourism centre. Now boasting iconic skyscrapers, gigantic malls, palm-shaped islands and 7-star hotels decorated in gold leaf the UAE has certainly made itself an iconic travel destination. Heading out of the city, visitors and residents can also enjoy a more laidback feel with vast rolling deserts and azure seas. The United Arab Emirates is ruled Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed who was named President by the UAE Federal Council in 2004 and is viewed a progressive moderniser.
