You only get one chance to make a first impression. When you are interviewing for a maid it is important that you start off on the right foot. They need to be aware of what is expected of them, the terms of employment and, more importantly, you need to be confident they are reliable, honest and up to the job.
The initial interview stage is usual via phone or by Skype. It is best to speak to the candidate so that you can determine their level of fluency. Often maids will ask friends to help them with writing texts or emails so will appear more capable than they actually are.
The second interview stage is frequently undertaken in a café or in a mall. It is best to choose somewhere that is easy for them to get too or offer to pay for their taxi. This will give you the chance to discuss the role in more detail and determine if they are a good personality fit for your family.
At this stage is important to discuss the following:
• Their typical day and their working hours
• Explain their duties and responsibilities. For example, will your maid be required to undertake any pet care, babysitting or do you need someone who can drive
• Outline any child care requirements. This is especially important if you have small children
• Ask for evidence or examples of their previous experience in undertaking such tasks
• Discuss their off day. If you foresee that they may be required to work their day off discuss this with them in advance and determine if they would be willing to do so in exchange for an alternative day off or for extra payment
• Be specific about their salary and what extras you will or will not provide
• If they are married and would like to have their husband stay over discuss if this is acceptable for you and ask to see their marriage certificate
• Check their references
Choose the questions that suit you or just print this out and have it handy while you are conducting interviews.
It is important for you both to be honest and upfront from the beginning. This is a life changing for both of you and your house maid and being open will help you find the right match for you. Good luck and happy hunting!
