There is a lot of variation in the salaries paid to maids, nannies, cooks and drivers. Average salaries for a maid tend to be between AED 1500 and AED 3500 per month depending on what your family feels comfortable paying. Market economics are also at play and the salary a maid is able to command will depend on their skill set and how attractive they are to their current and new potential employers. Factors affecting a maid’s pay will include their nationality, ability to speak English or Arabic, their experience and if they are looking for a live-in or live -out position. Drivers are considered to have a more valuable skill set and typically enjoy a higher salary.
On top of their salary, it is worth noting that you also need to pay holiday pay and return flights to their home country. Depending on your relationship with your maid and your circumstances you also may wish to include an end of year bonus and a food and/or toiletries allowance.
A good maid is certainly worth investing time and money in. They provide the freedom to work, the ability to spend quality time with your partner and the kids and respite from household duties.
Be aware that you are required to set a salary that is in accordance with the maid’s home country’s minimum wage laws which are as follows:
• Filipino nationals AED 1400
• Indian nationals AED 1100
• Sri Lankan nationals AED 825
• Indonesian nationals AED 800
• Bangladeshi nationals AED 725
